Why Would Anybody Choose to Work With You? – Episode 69

We see it all the time—advisors who are incredibly skilled and dedicated to their clients, but who come across like virtually every other advisor in the business. These advisors may be exceptional at their job, but practically nobody who might hire them or give them referrals can tell them apart from the rest of the pack.

Sound familiar?

There are two key steps to differentiating yourself and your practice:

  1. Sharpen your focus on specific clients you can serve extremely well.

  2. Be crystal clear on why those clients should choose you instead of the advisor down the street.

That clarity becomes a growth engine that attracts better-fit clients, deepens strategic relationships and elevates an advisor's entire practice.

Recently, CEG Worldwide coach and strategist Jessica Lee shared her best advice on how to implement these two strategies.

The dangers of poor differentiation

Most capable advisors struggle to stand out not because they aren't good at what they do, but because of how they're positioned. Instead of saying who they serve and why it matters, they simply describe what they do ("I provide comprehensive wealth management.”).

But affluent clients don't actually choose advisors based on a checklist of services. They ask a much simpler, more personal question: Does this person understand my world? And if that is not immediately clear, it is very hard to stand out no matter how capable you are.

Additionally, a lot of advisors worry that if they get more specific about who they do and don’t serve, they'll lose business. They stay broad and try to appeal to everyone, but what ends up happening is the opposite: Instead of becoming more attractive, they actually become more forgettable.

The results: Inconsistent referrals, long sales cycles, clients who price shop and COIs who don't think of you first because they can't describe what it is that you do that’s unique

Focusing on a niche

When most advisors hear the word niche, they think of it like a box that limits them. But in reality, it's a lens that sharpens who you attract. That shift in perspective is everything, because once you gain clarity around who you want to serve, a few powerful things start to happen:

  • Your expertise begins to compound

  • Your language becomes sharper

  • Your referrals start to accelerate

In fact, the number one reason why centers of influence don't send referrals is simply because they don't know who you serve. And if you're trying to serve anybody and everybody, it's almost impossible to stay top of mind because you're not clearly positioned or easily remembered. But when you can clearly articulate exactly who you serve and the value you deliver to that specific group, everything changes.

Communicating your unique value

That said, you can have the clearest niche in the world, but if you can't articulate why the people in that niche should choose you in a way that lands quickly, it doesn't translate into opportunity.

The way to think about your value proposition is that it's a story, not a tagline. It's something that an ideal client hears and immediately thinks, “that’s me!” or “that’s my neighbor down the street.” But for that to happen, your message has to be clear, concise and compelling. Your language here is the bridge that connects you to your ideal clients and the people who refer them.

The framework to use here is very straightforward. It's ultimately, "I help my niche and the big benefit I deliver." A few examples of what this could look like:

  • I help software company executives make work optional.

  • I help suddenly single women navigate hard financial decisions with confidence.

  • I help owners of construction companies become independent of their businesses.

Notice none of those sound like a list of services. They sound like outcomes and they sound like understanding—the two things potential clients are thinking about most.
